History of the School

St. Patrick’s High School – Iten was founded in 1961 through a partnership between the Patrician Brothers of Ireland, the Catholic Church, and the Local Leaders led by the late Hon. William Murgor, who was then the area chief. The school opened its doors to the first class of 30 students on February 1st, 1961.

The school has expanded from the initial 4 classrooms on a small piece of land to the current 20 classrooms standing on 100 acres. About 70 acres of this land is utilized to produce food for the school. Farming in school includes: cattle, sheep, pig rearing and assorted crops. The school community is very grateful to H.E. Former President of the republic of Kenya, Daniel T. Arap Moi, CGH, for the role he played in enabling the school to expand its land acreage to the current 100 acres

In the 1960s-80s, SPHS-Iten was among the top performing schools, especially in the A-level national exams. Joining the school then was not whether one would pass but how high one would do so! In the period after 1990s, however, the school dropped significantly although it remained among the top 100 secondary schools in the country. The SPHS- Iten has great reputation in sports especially its prowess in Hockey, Volleyball, Basketball and Athletics. The Saints held the National Hockey champion in 1985, 1988 and 1990. It also held severally the title of Basketball champions of the defunct Rift Valley Province. It was the national Volleyball Champions for 17 years with 15 years running in a row (1970-1984)!

In Athletics, the SPHS-Iten is most famous for producing Olympians and World Champions! The sporting future continues to have a great potential for the school. The Board of Management (BOM) has taken an interest in improving the sports performance of the school. Brother Colm O’Connel, Chair of the Sports and Health Committee in the BOM, continuously works with the school management to promote identification, training and exposure of talent among learners.

SPHS-Iten has always been in the fore front of innovations. In 1989, it became the first school in Keiyo and the then surrounding districts of the North Rift Region to acquire computers. This achievement made the school to be the first to acquire email/internet connectivity despite the then  poor  telephone coverage. SPHS-Iten is famous for the annual Iten Maths Contest (IMC), a national competition for secondary schools which is set and organized by the school and which was first done in 1975. In 2015, the school increased contests by introducing Iten Chemistry Contest (ICC) that is proving to be very popular with many participating schools.

SPHS-Iten is proud to have its alumni in top positions in various fields including Government, Private sector and Academia. The old boys have made invaluable contribution in community development and nation building. The Board is determined to have SPHS-Iten occupy a central place in the national life of the country, KENYA.
